What is Longevity?

Longevity is the achievement of a long life. We may hope for longevity so that we can experience many years of quality time with loved ones or have time to explore the world. But living to a ripe old age doesn't necessarily mean healthy or happy longevity if it is burdened by disability or disease. So, what would be the ideal meaning of longevity? Studying different populations around the world seeking this information define populations living in “The Blue Zones” having the best longevity.

 

"The Blue Zones" refers to several regions around the world where people tend to live much longer than average and experience lower rates of chronic diseases. These regions include places like Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Nicoya Peninsula (Costa Rica), Ikaria (Greece), and Loma Linda (California, USA).

Key points from studies of these areas include:

  • Diet: Blue Zone inhabitants typically follow plant-based diets rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, and nuts. They consume minimal amounts of meat and processed foods.

  • Lifestyle: Physical activity is a natural part of daily life, often through activities like walking, gardening, or manual labor. Social connections and strong community bonds contribute to overall well-being.

  • Mindfulness: Blue Zone residents often have strong social networks and engage in stress-reducing activities like prayer, meditation, or napping.

  • Purpose: Having a sense of purpose and meaning in life is common among Blue Zone populations. They maintain active lifestyles even in old age, often through work or community involvement.

Overall, the Blue Zones offer insights into how lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, social connections, and mindset can contribute to longevity and overall health. Applying some of these principles to our own lives may help improve quality of life and increase lifespan.

 

"Ikigai" is a Japanese concept that translates to "reason for being" or "purpose in life" similar to the french “ raison d'etre” It represents finding fulfillment and meaning through the convergence of four elements:

  • Passion: Doing what you love and what you are good at. This involves engaging in activities that bring joy, satisfaction, and a sense of flow.

  • Mission: Contributing to something greater than oneself. It involves identifying a purpose or mission that aligns with personal values and interests.

  • Vocation: Pursuing a career or vocation that not only provides financial stability but also allows for personal growth and fulfillment.

  • Profession: Engaging in activities that the world needs and is willing to pay for. This involves finding a way to leverage one's skills and passions to meet the needs of others.

 

The intersection of these four elements forms one's "ikigai" – the sweet spot where passion, mission, vocation, and profession come together. Finding and living in alignment with one's ikigai is believed to lead to a sense of purpose, satisfaction, and well-being.

I find my ikigai is to continuously evolve by studying all these points and learn from scholars and my experiences to better shine light on my path which includes parting guidance and support to those in need, and learning from them too.
